IPL 2027 Fantasy Cricket Tips

Most fantasy teams don't lose because of bad luck. They lose because of three repeatable mistakes. Fix those and your rank jumps more than any "hot tip" ever will.

Build Your 11 Around Roles, Not Names

The single biggest mistake in fantasy cricket is picking players because you recognise them, not because your team needs that role. A balanced IPL fantasy XI usually looks something like this:

  • 3 to 4 specialist batsmen who bat in the top order and face the most balls
  • 1 to 2 wicketkeeper-batsmen, since keepers score extra points for stumpings and catches
  • 2 to 3 all-rounders who can pick up points in both batting and bowling columns
  • 3 to 4 specialist bowlers, split between pace and spin depending on the venue

Stacking six batsmen because they're all big names leaves you exposed the moment the pitch turns slow and bowlers start cleaning up. Build the shape first, then fill it with form players.

Pick Captain And Vice-Captain On Matchup, Not Reputation

Your captain scores double points and your vice-captain scores 1.5x, so this single decision swings your rank more than any other pick on the team sheet. The question isn't "who's the best player in the league" — it's "who's most likely to have a big day in this specific match."

Three things matter more than reputation when you're choosing: how that player has performed against this exact opponent recently, whether the pitch suits their style (a spinner on a turning track, a powerplay hitter on a small ground), and whether they're batting in a position that actually gets enough balls to rack up points. A star player batting at number 6 in a chase that finishes in 15 overs might not even get to the crease.

Read The Pitch Before You Lock Your Team

Every IPL ground has a personality. Chepauk in Chennai tends to help spinners as the match wears on. Wankhede in Mumbai usually rewards clean hitting with a quick outfield. Eden Gardens can swing either way depending on recent weather. None of this is secret information — it's just information most fantasy players don't bother checking before team selection closes.

Pitch TypeWho Tends To Benefit
Dry, slow, turningSpinners, and batsmen strong against spin
Hard, true, fast outfieldTop-order batsmen, fast bowlers with pace
Fresh or damp surfaceSeamers, especially with the new ball

Check the last two or three matches played at that venue this season before you finalise your side. Ten minutes of research here usually does more for your score than any last-minute captain swap.

Don't Chase Last Week's Winning Team

Copying the team that topped the leaderboard last match feels safe, but it's usually a step behind. That team was built for a specific pitch, a specific opponent and a specific team news situation that's already changed. Build fresh for every match using the same process: roles first, then matchup-based captaincy, then pitch check. The process is what's repeatable — the players underneath it change every game.
